Manchester People First are our 2024/2025 charity partner.
Manchester People First are a self advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities. They provide training and facilities for people with disabilities so that they can make decisions about their own lives.
Manchester People First work with other people such as Manchester City Council, NHS, Universities, Police and other voluntary sector groups to help them understand what is important to people with a learning disability.
Manchester & District Home for Lost Dogs was founded in 1893 by a group of Manchester Businessmen who were concerned about the large number of stray dogs roaming the City. The leading members of the group included Mr. Megson a printer and stationer (whose firm is still very active), and Mr. Alfred Nixon a leading Chartered Accountant in Manchester. It was Mr Nixon’s son and partners who continued to play a leading part in the administration of the Home until shortly after the last war in 1945.
Over the years the City of Manchester has grown around Manchester Dogs’ Home and it is now very much an inner city rescue centre. To offset the inner city environment of the Manchester Home they regenerated a run-down site that is now known as Cheshire Dogs’ Home.
THEIR MISSION:
Continue to accept stray and unwanted dogs in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire districts.
To vaccinate and microchip all dogs in our care and find them good homes.
To care for and treat the sick and injured dogs and nurse them back to good health ready for adoption.
To provide low cost neutering.
To attend schools and other events to teach about responsible dog ownership and safety.
We also promise that we will never put a healthy dog down.
